TThe Hearts for Hope Foundation is a non-profit organization started in 2009 with the mission to provide financial aid to families battling Cystic Fibrosis (CF). To date, the foundation has raised over $700,000 and has been instrumental to many families in alleviating the financial burden that comes with having a CF patient to care for. Cystic Fibrosis is a devastating genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. More than ten million Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene and at least 30,000 children and adults live with the disease every day. While advances continue to be made in finding a cure and improving the life expectancy and quality of life of young people with CF, sadly, today there is no cure. CF patients are often in the hospital for days, if not weeks, at a time. Upon discharge, they frequently need daily physical therapy in addition to dozens of medications to keep their lungs free of fluids and infection. Too often a patient’s lungs can degenerate enough that they have no choice but to undergo a lung transplant to save their life if they are lucky enough to find a matching donor.
The Hearts of Hope Foundation was founded by the family of a former friend and classmate of Scargo Hill Principal Mark Gallivan. Mark has supported the foundation and its mission to spread awareness for those suffering from CF since its inception.
